10&U medley relay club records broke at time trial

Both 10&U medley relay club records were broken at the time trial

Six new club records were set as many Riptides swimmers attempted longer distance events such as the 400, 800 and 1500 for the first time at the Spring Distance Challenge Time Trial.

In the 200 medley relay, both 10&U club records were broken. The boys team of Andrew, Kai, Anthony, and Leighten broke their second record of the year, while Shallis, Joanna, Kiana and Jaime smashed the old girls record by 12 seconds, set in 2013 by Emily, Avi, Kassandra and Aydan.

Avery, Avi, Domenic, Emiko and Jeremy all braved the 1500 free for the first time. Avi and Emiko both swam under Camryn’s old 11-12 club record, but Emiko set the new mark with a 19:54, just 8 seconds off the Nat time. Neo swam 18:13 and smashed Simon Cuell’s 2010 15&O club record by 19 seconds.

Anthony, Joanna and Kiana swam the 800 for the first time, a big distance for 10&U swimmers. Anthony set a new Riptides club record with a 13:26, while Kiana’s 12:40 broke Camryn’s 2011 record by 48 seconds.

Andrew, Kai, and Shallis were successful in swimming the 400 for the first time. In their second attempts at the distance, Leighten dropped 50 seconds and Jaime took 2 minutes of her personal best.

In the 200 free, Natalie and Patrick took 1 minute off their previous best times while the youngest team members, Anjah and Bryn excelled at swimming the distance for the first time.

Rachel - new club record in 400 IM

Rachel – new club record in 400 IM

The annual Time Trial challenged the Riptides to swim the longer distance events. For the older swimmers, the 800 free and 400 IM were the big events, while the younger ones swam the 200 and 400 free. Swimmers can qualify for the Regional Age Group Trials by achieving time standards in these events.

Two club records were broken in an interesting fashion.  In her first time swimming the 400 IM, Rachel’s 6:26.07 broke Avery’s club record of 6:28.14, which was just set 4 days earlier in Calgary. Later in the 800 free, Avery’s time of 11:12.69 smashed Rachel’s new club record of 11:51.19!

Josh had the biggest drop of the day taking 3 minutes off his 800 free time, well under the Trials MQT (meet qualifying time). Avi and Sean also got MQTs in the 800, while Emily easily got her time in the 400 free and Emiko and Aidan got their MQTs in the 400 IM.

Coach’s Report

Cascade Age Group Challenge report from Coach Ben:

Lucas had a great first meet of the season, swimming two very fast 50’s. Lucas has really come around this year and works hard in the pool. It’s no surprise he did well!

Pierre-Andre swam 50 back, 50 free and a grueling 50 fly. Fly is not an easy stroke to learn and Pierre has been working on putting it together in practice. Keep it up!

Domenic was at his first competition of the year. It is never easy to get up in front of so many people and perform! Domenic had two very fast 50m races, what stood out for me was his great flip turn in the 50 free!

Lucas pummeled his two best times, including a very impressive 5 second drop in the 50 free. Lucas has really come around and started to put good effort into each practice. Great work!

Tyler crushed his personal bests in the 50 free and 50 back, results of dedicated work in the pool every day. Tyler also swam with Pierre in the 50 fly, not an easy race. Great job!

Alexandra continues to impress, both in practice and at competition. She annihilated her 50 free best time, dropping over 8 seconds, a great result. She also improved her 50 back. Great job Alex!

Ava swam two days of this swim meet. She swam the 100 backstroke for the first time and also swam a new best time in the 100 free!  Fun fact: Ava has swum at every swim meet so far, great dedication!

Cascade Age Group Challenge report from Coach Don:

Nick swam a strong 400 free dropping four seconds which qualified him for Age Group Trials. His biggest improvement was in the 100 fly dropping 16 seconds and his best finish was 6th in 50 back.

Aydan at her first big meet! She had a great weekend braving many events for the first time.  She made her first top 25 in the 400 free. Well done.

Emma was back in action with four second swims in: 50 fly finishes 6th, 50 back gains one spot to finish 11th, 50 breast 16th and 50 free 8th. Her racing times qualify her for Senior Provincials.

Neo had a busy weekend. He had some club records as a target, not an easy task, and he made his mark on four of them! Making finals on all his races he stepped up on the podium four times for: Gold in 100 fly and three bronze in 200 free, 100 free & 50 back.

Amanda was gliding beautifully in her 200 free for her best improvement of 28 seconds. Her technique is improving so well.

Miriam the funny girl in the group has been consistent in practice which helped her to perform 100% personal best times!

Avi has really focused in training, bringing her to race for 100% personal best times. Also getting really smooth in the water helped her to drop 55 seconds in the 200 Free for another MQT and two “B” times in 50 free and 100 back.

Josh braved for the first time the big distance in the 1500m free finishing 7th, his best result of the meet. His improvement of two seconds for 50 back put him in his first final! His biggest improvement was in the 200 free dropping 18 seconds.

Alex is really quiet in training but pays attention to details to improve his strokes, helping him to race for 100% personal best times. He qualified for Age Group Trails in the 400 Free. His best finish was ninth in the 50 free.

Aidan managed to get to his first final in 50 back gaining one spot to finish 12th. His biggest improvement was in the 200 free dropping 21 seconds.

Sean had a great weekend. He qualified for Age Group Trials in the 400 & 1500 free. A remarkable improvement on his racing times of just over 70 seconds in his races.

Kassandra is always smiling at the pool. She is fun to coach and works hard and is on her way to great performances! She raced a beautiful butterfly for the first time and improved her 50 free by 3 seconds.

Avery also qualified for Age Group Trials in the 400 free with an astonishing improvement of 117 seconds! She also collected two more “B” times in 50 & 100 back.

Emily raced for 100% personal bests. She swam all her races with nice technique and braved the 200 free for the first time.

Well done team for the amazing performances you gave to your parents and coaches! Keep up the nice work and more surprises will come.

Distance Challenge Time Trials results

Our Times Trials was a success! Thanks to all the parents who helped out to make this possible. The distance challenge is to challenge all the swimmers and give them experience in the longer events. Those events are the ones that swimmers need to race in order to get their MQT for the Age Group Trials.

Congratulations to Aidan who grabbed his MQT in the 200 IM and 400 free. Also Avi added two more MQTs in the 200 IM and 400 free. The biggest drop in the 400 free goes to Lucas with a mind-blowing drop of 199.40 seconds, followed by a drop of 184.38 seconds for Domenic and Pierre-Andre with a drop of 114.30 seconds.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Going the Distance

Riptides swimmers took up the challenge to swim the long distance events at the annual Time Trial.  The results were outstanding with many attempting the events for the first time.

Three new club records were set and another Riptide qualified for Age Group Trials. Camryn and Amanda swam the 1500 free and 800 free respectively, for the first time, and set new 11-12 girls club records. Emma set a new 15 & over girls record in the 200 breast for the second time this year, this time in the short course pool. Aidan qualified for Age Group Trials by reaching the standard in both the 200 IM and 400 free.

Along with many personal bests, swimmers also reached new time standards. Avery got a B time in her first attempt at the 200 breast and came close to the club record in the 800 free. Avi got her Meet Qualifying Time in the 200 IM and 400 free and was very close to her first B time in both events.

In his first attempt at the 1500 free, Neo got his A time. He also had one last shot at breaking a club record in the 100 IM before he ages up next month. His time of 1:19.40 was good enough for another A time, but fell less than half a second short of the club record.

The meet was followed by a potluck dinner and Christmas gift exchange to celebrate the dedication and hard work of all the swimmers so far this year.

Distance Challenge Time Trial

We are hosting a time trial swim meet for all Riptides swimmers during regular practice hours on Monday, December 17 from 3:30 to 6:00 pm.  This is an opportunity for swimmers to try some of the long distance events that are not always offered at swim meets. It is also a chance to qualify for the Alberta Age Group Trials Championships in February by achieving a Meet Qualifying Standard.

At this meet, swimmers in the 10&U category can qualify in the 100 IM, 200 IM, or 400 free, while swimmers that are 11 or older can qualify in the 200 IM, 400 free, 800 free, or 1500 free.  Here are the Alberta Provincial Meet Qualifying Standards.

Warm-ups are from 3:30 to 4:25 pm and the meet will run from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. We need parents to help out as timers and stroke and turn judges. Please sign up for a shift here – http://volunteersignup.org/PHCRB.

Thanks to Lockie Lister, who is returning as our meet referee.

The swim meet will be followed by our annual Christmas party upstairs at the Rec Centre in Lady MacDonald Hall from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Details to follow by email.
