The past month the team was busy training and racing. First we were in Medicine Hat for the Long Course Age Group Trials with 12 swimmers representing the Riptides. At this meet any swimmer winning an event or getting their A time qualified for Provincials therefore we had a lot of exciting finals with our swimmers battling for medals and spots at Provincials. The Riptides parents cheered so loud that they lost their voices during the weekend. In total our swimmers brought back 16 medals: 4 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze and broke 4 club records. Congrats to Rachel, Sean and Emily for qualifying for Provincials. Rachel won the 400 IM and the 200 Breast, Sean won the 100 Free and 100 Fly and Emily got her “A” time and won silver in 100 Fly.
Also on the podium:
Rachel 2nd in 200 IM and 3rd in 50 Breast, 800 Free, and 100 Breast
Aidan 2nd in 200 Breast
Sean 2nd in 50 Breast and 800 Free and 3rd in 400 IM and 200 Breast
Avery 3rd in 200 Fly

10&U 100 Breast – Domenic, 1:52.86, previous record was Peter Brothers’ 1:55 in 2007
Next was the Alberta Age Group Championships in Edmonton. There were about 720 swimmers registered for the Championships from BC, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Newfoundland, Hong Kong, Cameroon and of course Alberta! We had 6 swimmers representing the Riptides. They raced so well that we finished in 3rd place in the small club category and 25th overall out of 62 clubs.
Emiko swam the fastest 200 and 800 free by an 11 year old in Alberta. Her best finishes were 4th in the 800 free, 7th in the 400 free and 9th in the 200 free. Sean won the B finals in the 200 Breast and finished in the top 10 in 400 IM, 50 Breast, and 800 free. Neo came very close to his Age Group National time in the 200 Fly and finished 6th, his highest placing.
Three club records were broken:
13-14 100 Free – Neo – 1:00.37, previous record was Jason Evans’ 1:00.55 in 2009
11-12 800 Free – Emiko – 10:54.50, previous record was Rachel, 11.12.91 in 2014
14 & Under 4×200 relay – Emiko, Avi, Rachel and Emily, 11.07.08
Training is still going for Emiko and Neo who are training for the Alberta Summer Games at the end of July. Wish them all the best.
Have a great summer and it was my pleasure to coach your swimmers this season. We had a blast and are hoping they will be back and ready for another exiting season starting in September.
