Avery, Emiko, Alex, Neo and Riley will be representing the Riptides at the Alberta Provincial Championships in March after a successful Alberta Age Group Trials in Calgary last weekend. In order to advance, swimmers needed to get an A time or win an event. Twelve Riptides competed and in total there were 54 personal best times, 14 medals won, and 5 new club records.
Avery led the girls winning gold, silver and bronze medals and breaking her own club record in the 800 free on the way to winning the race by a seven second margin qualifying for Provincials for the first time. Emiko qualified by swimming an A time in the 50 back which also put the 11 year old in the finals against a group of 12 year olds. She finished in 8th, her best placing at the meet.
Rachel had 5 top 10 finishes including a bronze medal in the 400 IM, in which she broke the club record. Maja swam 6 personal bests, while Avi swam 5 and Emily swam 4. In her first championship meet Emily, the youngest swimmer to qualify for the Riptides, made finals in two events with 5th in the 50 back being her best finish.
The team of Avery, Emiko, Maja and Rachel broke club records in the 200 free and 200 medley relays finishing 8th and 6th respectively out of 25 teams.
Neo led the boys with a 6 medal performance: 2 gold, 3 silver and a bronze. He swam 5 new A times and broke club records in the 50 and 100 fly. Sean, the breaststroke specialist, was on the podium 3 times for the 50, 100 and 200 breast winning 2 silver and a bronze. Riley won a bronze medal in the 200 IM by knocking 14 seconds off his own personal best. He also made finals in 4 other events. Josh took more time off than any other Riptide, dropping 22 seconds in the 800 free to finish 5th and 8 seconds off his 400 free to finish 6th. Alex swam 6 personal bests with his best finish being 6th in the 100 fly.
