Eighteen Riptides swam at the Cascade Age Group Challenge, a big three day meet in Calgary, and competed against 15 teams and 600 swimmers from across Alberta.  It was one of the most successful meets for the team as they placed first among small clubs and sixth out of fifteen overall and won the Team Spirit Award for their enthusiasm and cheering for teammates.  In total our swimmers won 25 medals, set three new club records and achieved numerous personal best times.

The Riptides 13&U boys relay teams dominated their age group winning gold in both their races. Neo, Alex, Riley and Sean took first in the 200 free, while Aidan, Sean, Neo and Riley won first in the 200 medley. The 12&U girls relay team of Avi, Rachel, Avery and Emiko won bronze in the 200 medley and set a new club record with their time of 2:35.21. They also finished 5th in the 200 free relay.

Avery led the girls with 5 medals. She took silver in the 100 & 200 back and the 100 & 200 free. In her first attempt at swimming the gruelling 400 IM, she won bronze and set a new club record!

Rachel set a new club record in the 800 free and won bronze in her first attempt at the distance event. She added silver medals in the 400 free and the 200 IM.

Emiko topped the podium in the 50 back winning gold in an exciting race and took the bronze in the 100 back. She also went faster than the previous club record in the 800 free, finishing a close 5th and only 3 seconds behind Rachel.

Neo led the boys with 5 medals. He won gold in the 1500m free, 400 IM, 200 back, and 50 free and silver in the 50 back. In a first for him, he made finals in 2 breaststroke events finishing 5th in both the 50 and 100 breast. He was out-sprinted by Sean who took bronze in the 50 and 4th in the 100. Sean made finals in all of his events, won bronze in the 100 fly and finished 4th in the 400 IM, 50 fly, and 5th in the 1500 free and 200 free.

Aidan won silver in the 400 free and bronze in the 100 back. He also finished 4th in the 200 back, an event in which the Riptides took 3 of the 4 top spots. Riley out-touched him by a tenth of second for the bronze and finished in the top ten in four other races. Alex won bronze in the 50 fly and finished 6th in the 100 fly.

In the 14 & over category, Nick won silver in the 400 free and bronze in the 50 breast.  Josh finished fifth in the 400 free and qualified for Age Group Trials in February.

There will be a large group of swimmers representing the club at the Regional Age Group Trials taking place at the Talisman Centre in Calgary from February 21 to 23, 2014.  It’s the next big meet that our swimmers are preparing for.  Event winners and swimmers that achieve ‘A’ times will advance to the Alberta Age Group Short Course Championships in March.
