Nine Riptides competed in the 2013 Alberta Regional Age Group Trials Short Course South, a massive three day meet at the Talisman Centre in Calgary. With prelims in the morning and finals at night, our swimmers competed in anywhere from 9 to 18 races each from Friday afternoon to Sunday night. Swimmers could advance to the Alberta Championships by winning an event or achieving an A time standard.
Neo almost duplicated his 6 gold medal performance at last year’s long course Age Group Trials, by finishing with 5 gold and 1 silver and recording five new A times in preparation for next weekend’s Alberta Age Group Championships. He also combined with Alex, Sean, Aidan, and Nick for one 3rd and three 4th place relay finishes.
In his first appearance at Regionals, Alex won a bronze medal in the 50 fly and added three 7th place finishes after making it to finals in four of his seven events. Sean established himself as a distance swimmer, competing in a gruelling set of races: the 400, 800, and 1500 free, finishing 5th, 9th and 8th respectively. Aidan had two top 8 finishes in the 400 free and 100 breast, while Nick swam to six top ten finishes with his best being 5th in the 200 free.
For the girls, Avi broke the 10 & Under 200 free Riptides club record and made it to finals in 4 events, finishing 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th. Maja, Avery and Emiko also competed in their first Regionals meet and each dropped lots of time getting personal bests and achieving numerous new B times in multiple events.
