Summer Games Trials – Triathlon

Riptides swimmers Aidan, Sean and Neo, along with the Coho’s Mackenzie, braved a freezing cold morning to compete in the Alberta Summer Games trials for triathlon at the University of Calgary.

There were two spots available to represent Big Country Zone 2 at the upcoming games in Lethbridge.

After a quick 300m swim, the boys transitioned to the 9.2 km bike ride around the campus, and finished with a 3 km run.

Neo raced to a silver medal and the top qualifying spot for Big Country. He was chasing Johnny, a fast swimmer from the Cochrane Comets, who took the gold.

Mackenzie, Aidan and Sean narrowly missed qualifying for the games as they finished third, fourth and fifth respectively, among Big Country racers.

There is one more spot open to Big Country triathletes and it will be contested at the Elbow Valley Kids of Steel Triathlon in Calgary on June 17.

Lethbridge Spring Challenge

Wow! What an unbelievable weekend for the team. Friday, the training went very well. The swimmers worked hard. They also had a chance to to meet Ryan Thornley who has just returned from the Olympic trials. He was awarded Athlete of the Year from Lethbridge University 2011/12. Ryan kindly gave the Riptides swimmers a talk on his experiences as a swimmer and what it takes to achieve your potential as an athlete.

What a fantastic meet! The team did an amazing job racing for 100% best times!!! Yes all of the swimmers ended the weekend with all best times and four 3rd place finishes.

Congratulation to our new Age Group Trials qualifiers Sean Parker in his 400 Free with a time of 6:45.64 beating the meet qualifying time (MQT) by 10 sec. of 6:55.00 for 11 year olds.

Nick Anderson-Young collected one 3rd place in his 400 Free.

Neo Gleason made all the “B” standards times in his races and wound up with three 3rd places in 50 Fly, 50 Back and 50 Free.

The most improved swimmer of the meet goes to Neil Slemko, dropping an amazing 18 seconds in 50 Free and 35 seconds in 100 Free.

Also congratulations to Amanda Graham who this year has swum 100% best times in every race she has entered.

Thanks to the Chaperon(ne)s; they did an amazing job helping the group and feeding those hungry swimmers who eat a lot. Also thanks to Laura for all the logistics and guiding the chaperons to team success.

We now have three qualifiers for Age Group Trials: Neo, Nick & Sean, which will take place from June 15 to 17 in Lethbridge.

Here’s where you can find the meet qualifying times and all other time standards: riptides.ca/swimmers/standards

Swimmers still have a chance to qualify for Age Group Trails in the next month at the T-Rex Meet and the Summer Games Trials.

Well done Riptides!!!

Dino Cup Report

The biggest meet of the year for the novice group was the Dino Cup. The level of competition was much higher than your average novice meet. We also competed over 2 days. How did we do?

Emma Carmichael had improvement across all of her races and had a highest finish of 2nd! Emma also raced very well in her first 100 Butterfly, a VERY difficult race!

Katy Carmichael went under all her best times at this meet. Her best finish was 4th in a FAST 25 freestyle race! Katy’s biggest improvement was over a second in the 25 Free. Not easy in such a short race!

Sarah Carmichael had a best finish of 3rd in her 25 Backstroke, pulling very close to the club record in the process! Sarah almost improved by 6 seconds in that race!

Pierre Andre Dawe swam SO well at this meet and had some great improvement, his best being over 20 seconds in his 100 Freestyle. 20 seconds?? WOW

Magnus Ellis swam a full load at this swim meet, all 7 races. Magnus tried butterfly for the first time and finished 4th overall in the 25! Magnus also dropped over 3 seconds in the 25 Fr! Nice job!

Maja Ellis comes home with a win in the 25 Freestyle, biting at the heels of the club record in the process. Maja also came second in her favourite race, 25 back. Great results!

Sigrid Ellis once again improved in all of her races. Her best improvement, time-wise, was over 4 seconds in her 50 Free! She also swam her first 100 Free! Well done!

Tanzin King swam a full load of 7 races over the weekend and raced hard! Tanzin’s 50 backstroke was improved by over 4 seconds and she broke the minute barrier! Well done!

Avi Lamb battled through illness all weekend but still managed to improve by over 30 seconds in the 100 Breastroke. 30 seconds…that’s almost unheard of! Avi also knocked time off her 50 Breastroke and 100 Free. Nice work!

Alex Nielson comes home with 2 new club records, one in the 25 Free and the other in 25 Fly. I wasn’t expecting the fly as this was the first time he raced 25 fly. NICE! He also finished second in both those races!

Florence Pouliot swam hard in her last swim meet as a Riptide. She swam 4 best times and had a best finish of 4th in the 25 backstroke. I will sure miss having Florence around the pool!

Tyler Stadnyk was at his first ever swim meet as a Riptide. Quite the task to bring your first races to a big meet like this! Tyler did very well in the races he swam, having a great finish of 6th in the 25 backstroke!

Emily Titus managed to swim 4 best times and her first ever 25 fly! Emily improved by 1.71 seconds exactly in both her 25 FR and her 50 FR. Emily also had a great finish of 3rd in the 25 Freestyle. NICE!

The Parents survived a very hot and PACKED viewing area. They cheered, filmed and were so dedicated in bringing their kids all the way out for this 2 day meet! Thanks a lot!

Lethbridge Camp & Meet – May 3-6

Each year, the Riptides Swim Club goes on a road trip at the end of April or beginning of May. The main reason is to create a positive team building experience and it is a blast!!! On the training side, swimmers have been off swimming during spring break and are back in the water getting ready for the long course season. This mean that swim meets for the remainder of the season will be hosted in an Olympic size pool, 50m in length. The only exception is the Jr circuit meets.

The Lethbridge swim camp and meet is the perfect occasion to kick off the long course season. We will train at the University of Lethbridge 50m pool to get the swimmers familiar with the length before attacking the swim meet on the weekend.

The tentative schedule is to depart Canmore on Thursday, May 3 @ 3:30pm and return Sunday, May 6 after the swim meet has completed or until all Riptides have swum their events between 4:00 to 6 pm. Thursday night we plan to stay at the Days Inn Hotel and for the Friday & Saturday we will stay in the townhouses on the University of Lethbridge campus (only available starting May 4th as the students are still in residence until May 1st). We have stayed on campus previous years and have found the location to be very convenient. Each townhouse has 4 bedrooms/2 full bathrooms/full kitchen and living room. They are very clean, spacious and only a 5 minute walk to the pool.

The estimate cost is based on 12 swimmers 10 yrs & older, 2 coaches and 3 chaperones. The cost for each swimmer would be approximately $310, which includes accommodation, all meals/snacks, transportation and meet fees for 3 days.

We are looking for three Chaperones to help prepare all meals/snacks for the swimmers & coaches. There is no cost for the chaperones as they are volunteering their time to supervise the swimmers, prepare/cook all meals, and transport themselves to/from Lethbridge.

We will be travelling in a 15 person van for swimmers & coaches and we would need at least one support vehicle to transport luggage/supplies/chaperones. Any parents wishing to join the swimmers who are not chaperoning could join the team and contribute towards the cost. It is expected that they pay for their own hotel accommodation and food costs — rooms have been blocked at the Days Inn. Also if any swimmers 9 years old and younger wish to join the trip they must travel and stay at the hotel with the parent or guardian and pay their own cost.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Please let me know as soon as possible about registering swimmers or interest in chaperoning. The deadline to sign up and pay is April 14th.
